Description On 9 July 1846, during the Mexican-American War, Commander John B. Montgomery and his detachment of Marines and sailors from the sloop-of-war Portsmouth raised the U.S. Flag over (Yerba Buena) San Francisco , California. Commander John B. Montgomery, USN. A photograph of an autographed daguerreotype, later printed by Carruth & Carruth of Oakland, California and used eventually for publication in the “The Life of Rear Admiral John D. Sloat, USN.” by Edwin A. Sherman. The photo would have been taken no earlier than 1844, at which time he was assigned as Commanding Officer to USS Portsmouth. NHHC Photograph Collection, NH 47742.
