The Mongol rulers, who were afraid of rebellions, created a clan of slave warriors, mostly of Turkic origin and Christian faith, who were taken away from their parents as children.

Их обращали в ислам и посылали в Северную Африку. Эти воины стали известны под названием мамелюков, что означает «находящиеся в подчинении». К 1250 году мамелюки свергли монгольскую династию Айюбидов в Египте и правили там до 1517 года.
