Lieutenant Donald Rumsfeld (right, standing) during his service within the United States Navy, in-front of a Grumman S-2 Tracker aircraft. Following his graduation from Princeton, Rumsfeld commissioned into the United States Navy in 1954. While serving in the Navy, Rumsfeld was a command pilot. As a naval aviator he flew several Navy's aircraft such as Grumman S-2 Tracker, North American T-28 Trojan and North American T-6 Texan. In 1957 Rumsfeld move from active-duty into United States Navy Reserve and in 1975 following his appointment as Secretary of Defense, Rumsfeld was transferred from United States Navy Reserve to the Individual Ready Reserve Reserve. Rumsfeld retired from the Navy in 1989 with the rank of Captain.
