Summary
Description Waikeria Prison for WW1 objectors, c.1923 (27160240521).jpg |
During the First World War between 1,500 to 2,000 objectors and defaulters were convicted, or came under state control, for their opposition to war. At least 64 of these were still at Waikeria Prison on 5 March 1919 - some of whom had gone on hunger strike in protest. This image of the interior of Waikeria Prison comes from a Government Publication called 'The Evolution of the Prison System', published in 1923.
