Sam Colangelo (born December 26, 2001) is an American professional ice hockey forward who is currently playing for the Anaheim Ducks in the National Hockey League (NHL). He was selected by the Ducks in the second-round, 36th overall, in the 2020 NHL Entry Draft.

Playing career

Early life and high school

Colangelo was born on December 26, 2001, in Stoneham, Massachusetts.[1] In high school, he attended Lawrence Academy, where he played on the ice hockey team and scored 34 goals with 70 assists.[2]

Amateur

Colangelo played two seasons with the Chicago Steel in the United States Hockey League (USHL).[2] In his first season, he scored just three goals.[1] But in his second season he scored 28 goals with 30 assists.[1] Colangelo opted for the NHL draft.[3] He was drafted in the second-round, 36th overall, by the Anaheim Ducks in the 2020 NHL Entry Draft.[2][4]

Colangelo played three seasons of collegiate hockey at Northeastern University before entering the transfer portal after his Junior season. Moving to the Western Michigan Broncos for the 2023-24 season, Colangelo broke out offensively, finishing tied for fifth among NCAA leaders in goals, scoring a career-high 24 while setting single-season bests with 24 goals, 19 assists, for 43 points in 38 appearances.

Professional

Having concluded his senior year with the Broncos, Colangelo was originally signed to a professional try-out contract the Ducks AHL affiliate, the San Diego Gulls, on April 2, 2024.[5] He made his professional debut with the Gulls and after 4 successful regular season games he was signed to a two-year, entry-level with the Anaheim Ducks on April 12, 2024.[6] Colangelo immediately joined the Ducks roster to conclude the 2023–24 season and scored his first goal in his NHL debut in a 6–3 defeat to the Calgary Flames on April 13, 2024.[7]
