London were the defending champions, however, they availed of their right to promotion to the All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship and did not field a team.[1][2]

The All-Ireland final was played at Thurles Sportsfield on 12 October 1969 between Kildare and Cork, in what was their first ever championship meeting. Kildare won the match by 2-08 to 3-04 to claim their first ever All-Ireland title.[3][4][5]
