During the season, Florida was placed on a postseason ban for NCAA violations. The Gators won what would have been their first SEC title, but the SEC banned the Gators from postseason play and later vacated the Gators' conference title; the NCAA subsequently banned them from bowl games in 1985 and 1986 as well. The SEC then awarded runner-up LSU the SEC's automatic Sugar Bowl bid reserved for the conference champion.
