Football league season


The 2022–23 Championnat National 2 was the 25th season of the fourth tier in the French football league system in its current format. This season the competition was contested by 64 clubs split geographically across four groups of 16 teams. The teams included amateur clubs (although a few are semi-professional) and the reserve teams of professional clubs. The competition started on 20 August 2022 and completed on 3 June 2023.[2]

Teams

On 13 July 2022, the FFF ratified the constitution of the competition, and published the groups.[3]

Promotion and Relegation

The top team in each group were promoted to 2023–24 Championnat National.

Due to the restructuring of the French football leagues, this season the bottom five teams in each group were relegated to 2023–24 Championnat National 3, along with the two worst performing eleventh-placed teams. This performance was calculated based on the performance of each eleventh-placed team in matches against the teams finishing 6th to 10th.[6]

Notes:
  1. As a result of a challenge lodged by Rouen after their 2–0 defeat at Poissy on 10 September 2022, the match was awarded to Rouen by the FFF on 21 December 2022, with a 0–3 scoreline, and Poissy were deducted a penalty point. This was due to invalid health certificates for two players. The FFF deducted an additional three points, one each for the other three games the players had participated in.[7] At the end of the season, Poissy were excluded from National competition by the DNCG.[8]
  2. Head to head, Beauvais vs Blois vs Saint-Pryvé. Beauvais 7 points, Blois 5 points, Saint-Pryvé 4 points.
  3. Head to head, Granville vs Guingamp (res). Granville 6 points, Guingamp (res) 0 points.
  4. On 6 December 2022, the DNCG announced a three point deduction for Évreux and a five point deduction for Chartres as a result of financial mismanagement.[9]
  5. Head to head, Vannes vs SM Caen (res). Vannes 6 points, SM Caen (res) 0 points.
  6. On 6 December 2022, the DNCG announced a three point deduction for Évreux and a five point deduction for Chartres as a result of financial mismanagement.[9] In addition to their sportive relegation to National 3, Chartres was administratively relegated to Régional 1 by the DNCG.[10]

  2. On 10 January 2023, the DNCG announced a deduction of 3 points for FC 93 as a result of financial mismanagement.[11]

  4. On 22 November 2022, the DNCG announced a deduction of 3 points for Wasquehal as a result of financial mismanagement.[12]

  6. Head to head, Metz (res) vs Sainte-Geneviève. Metz (res) 3 points, +2 Goal Difference, Sainte-Geneviève 3 points, -2 Goal Difference.
  7. On 1 June 2023, the FFF announced a deduction of 4 points for Sainte-Geneviève as a result of the incident that happened on 25 March 2023 during the game against Boulogne.[13][14]

  1. Head to head, Grasse vs Thonon Évian vs Lyon La Duchère. Grasse 10 points, Thonon Évian 4 points, Lyon La Duchère 3 points.
  2. The match between Alès and Fréjus Saint-Raphaël, on 13 May 2023, was abandoned before the hour mark after technical problems caused one of the floodlight pylons to fail. Fréjus Saint-Raphaël were leading 1–0 at the time. The result stands until investigated by the 'FFF'.[15] The game was replayed on 20 May 2023.

  4. On 6 December 2022, the DNCG announced a five point deduction for Alès as a result of financial mismanagement.[9]

Season outcomes

Promotion

Rouen, Épinal, Marignane GCB, GOAL FC were champions of each group, and were promoted to 2023–24 Championnat National, subject to the usual ratification by the FFF and DNCG.

Relegations

A total of 22 clubs were relegated to 2023–24 Championnat National 3. Reprieves are required to maintain this number in light of any administrative relegations enacted by the FFF and DNCG.

Évreux, Rennes (res), Vannes, SM Caen (res), Chartres, Reims (res), Sainte-Geneviève, Metz (res), Belfort, Saint-Maur, Sète, Saint-Priest, Lyon (res), Canet Roussillon, Louhans-Cuiseaux, Vierzon, Moulins Yzeure, Stade Bordelais, Nantes (res) and Lorient (res) finished in places 12 to 16 in their groups.

The two eleventh placed teams with the worst record against teams in sixth to tenth place in their groups are also relegated:

Reprieves

The following reprieves took place.

  • Aubagne were reprieved, due to the administrative relegation of Lyon La Duchère by the DNCG, with Lyon La Duchère indicating they are not appealing the decision.[18][19]
  • Saint-Quentin were reprieved, due to the expulsion from the national competition of Poissy by the DNCG, which was confirmed on appeal.[8][20]

Any reprieves required beyond the two eleventh-placed clubs were taken from the twelfth-placed clubs with the best record, excluding Évreux due to their expulsion from the national competition by the DNCG.[17]
