Add article description

The 2024 United States Senate election in Delaware will be held on November 5, 2024, to elect a member of the United States Senate to represent the state of Delaware. Primary elections will take place on September 3, 2024.[1] Incumbent Democrat Tom Carper, who was re-elected with 60.0% of the vote in 2018, has announced he will not seek re-election to a fifth term in office.[2]

Quick Facts Party ...

Carper's political career began in 1976 with his election as Delaware State Treasurer. He later served as U.S. Representative for Delaware's at-large congressional district and as Governor of Delaware before being elected to the Senate in 2000, unseating incumbent Republican Bill Roth, namesake of the Roth IRA. Carper is currently the chair of the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee and is the last Vietnam War veteran serving in the Senate. On May 22, 2023, Carper announced his retirement, saying "if there was ever an opportune time to step aside and pass the torch to the next generation, it's coming, and it will be here on January 3, 2025."[2]

This will be the first open race for this seat since 1970. The last time Republicans won a U.S. Senate race in Delaware was in 1994.
