Basel Adra (also Basil and also Al-Adra or Al-Adraa,[1] Arabic: باسل عدرا or باسل العدرا) is a Palestinian activist and journalist who in 2021 was falsely accused of framing the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) and who in 2022 was beaten while filming the IDF demolishing a structure that he built. He co-wrote and co-directed the 2024 documentary film No Other Land, which premiered at the 74th Berlin International Film Festival,[2] at which it won two best-documentary awards.[3][4]

Personal life

Adra was born to father Nasser[5] in At-Tuwani, Hebron Municipality, in the West Bank of Palestine.[6][7] He lives in Masafer Yatta, Hebron.[8][9]

Career and activism

Adra is an activist[10] and a volunteer photographer for B'Tselem.[11] He works as journalist for online publications +972 Magazine and Local Call.[12]

In 2021, HaKol HaYehudi and Channel 12 falsely accused Adra of setting fire to a building in the Hebron Hills area of the West Bank, in order to frame the Israeli Defence Forces (IDF).[1] On May 8, 2022, he was beaten by IDF forces[12][13] while reporting on IDF soldiers dismantling a structure that he built.[14]

In February 2024, the film No Other Land about the situation of Masafer Yatta that he co-directed premiered at the 74th Berlin International Film Festival and won the Berlinale Best Documentary film award and Panorama Audience Award for Best Documentary Film.[15][16]
