Butler Township was organized in 1841.[4]
The Francis Godfroy Cemetery, Wallace Circus and American Circus Corporation Winter Quarters, and Westleigh Farms are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.[5]
According to the 2010 census, the township has a total area of 29.84 square miles (77.3 km2), of which 28.91 square miles (74.9 km2) (or 96.88%) is land and 0.93 square miles (2.4 km2) (or 3.12%) is water.[3]
