There are two species:[2]
- Cheilobarbus capensis (Smith, 1841) (Cape whitefish)
- Cheilobarbus serra (W. K. H. Peters, 1864) (Sawfin)
Both species are tetraploid, like Pseudobarbus redfins, from which they were separated.[3]
