Riding Governor of New Jersey Thomas Kean's wave of success in the 1985 elections, Republicans Arango of West New York and Ronald Dario of Union City defeated Democratic incumbent Robert Ranieri and newcomer Mario R. Hernandez, and were two of the four Republicans to take office in the Assembly from the usually solidly Democratic Hudson County.[4][5] Running for re-election in 1987, Arango and newcomer Angelo M. Valente of Hoboken were defeated by Democrats Bernard Kenny and Bob Menendez.[1][6]
