History

In 2013, Cricket Ireland formed the three-day Interprovincial Championship, Cup and Trophy featuring teams from Leinster, the NCU and the North West. The Leinster team is known as Leinster Lightning.

In January 2015, Ted Williamson was announced as the new head coach, taking over at the helm from Trent Johnston.[1] Under his coaching, Leinster Lightning took a clean-sweep of trophies in the 2015 and 2016 seasons before he stepped down from the position.[2]

Up to and including the 2016 Inter-Provincial Championship, the matches were not given first-class status. However, at an International Cricket Council meeting in October 2016, first-class status was awarded to all future matches.[3][4]

In 2019, Nigel Jones was appointed to the role of Head Coach and Pathway Manager.[5] Following the 2019 season the Inter-Provincial Championship was suspended due to the COVID-19 pandemic and has yet to return.[6]

In the history of the Inter-provincial series, Lightning have won 21 of the available 29 trophies.[7]

2023 was the first season in which the team failed to win at least one competition.
