In July 2021, the Ethiopian government announced it will be closing at least 30 overseas missions in light of the financial costs brought by the COVID-19 pandemic and the Tigray War.[1]

In 2022, Ethiopia reopened a few of its previously closed embassies.

  1. Ethiopia does not recognize the unilaterally-declared independence of Somaliland, and has formal diplomatic relations with Somalia. Nonetheless, Ethiopia has a consulate-general in Hargeisa, the capital of Somaliland.
