Outpost Magazine was a Canadian adventure-travel publication based out of Toronto, Ontario. Initially published six times a year, it was known for longform adventure narratives from across the world, often with a Canadian perspective.[1] While no formal announcement was made declaring its closure, Outpost published its 130th and final issue in early 2022.[2] Its website and social media channels have not been updated since December 2022.[3][4][5]

History

The first issue of Outpost was published in April 1996.[6][7] Its founding editor was Christopher Frey.[8] In 2006, Matthew Robinson took over as publisher after joining the sales team in 1997.[9]

Outpost distinguished itself in the travel world by sending teams of travel writers and photographers on large-scale multi-day expeditions, eventually labeled "opXpeditions," to various countries such as Colombia, Jordan and Taiwan.[10] These trips occasionally took on a specific mission, such as retracing the Franklin's lost expedition in Nunavut.[11]

By the mid-2010s, these expeditions evolved into short video web series, focusing on destinations such as Peru[12] and Thailand[13]. Its multimedia efforts expanded into a podcast miniseries, hosted by journalist Michael Fraiman, entitled "How to Make Money Travelling", which lasted for six episodes in 2018.[14]

In 2022, with no public announcement, Outpost published its final print edition and ceased updating its website.
