Phan Văn Giang ([fāːn˧ vān˧ zāːŋ˧]; born October 1960) is a Vietnamese General, politician and Vietnam's Minister of National Defence. He[1] joined the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Vietnam in 2016.

History

Phan Văn Giang was born in October 14, 1960 in Hồng Quang commune, Nam Trực district, Nam Định province but his hometown is from Thai Nguyen province.

Phan Văn Giang began his military career in August 1978. When he joined the army, he was an information soldier in Battalion 4, Regiment 677, Division 346. In February 1979, when the border war broke out When the North broke out, he fought at high point 893 Pát village, Cao Chương commune, Trà Lĩnh district, Cao Bằng province.

On November 20, 1979, his superiors sent him to study for the exam to enter the Tank and Armor Officer University school to major in tank and armor command.

On December 4, 1982, he was admitted to the Communist Party of Vietnam.

In September 1983, Phan Van Giang graduated Bachelor's degree in tank and armored command and staff from the Tank and Armor Officer University school; He was promoted to Lieutenant, assigned to work at Division 312, Army Corps 1 and held the position of Platoon Leader of Company 3, Battalion 1037. In addition, he also trained to become a strategic and operational command officer at the National Defense Academy. He earned a doctorate in military science from the National Defense Academy

On June 4, 1984, he became an official member of the Communist Party of Vietnam.

In October 1984, he became Vice Captain of Engineering Company 1, Battalion 1037.

In May 1986, he was appointed Deputy Secretary of the Party Cell, Captain of Company 1, Battalion 1037.

In April 1989, he was appointed as Battalion Party Committee member, Battalion Deputy Commander and Chief of Staff of Battalion 1037.

In October 1993, he was appointed Assistant to the General Staff Department, Division 312, Army Corps 1.

In April 1996, he was appointed as Deputy Chief of Staff of Regiment 141, Division 312, Army Corps 1.

In September 1997, he became a member of the Regiment's Party Committee, Deputy Regiment Commander - Chief of Staff of Regiment 209, Division 312, Army Corps 1.

In December 1999, he was appointed Deputy Secretary of the Regiment Party Committee, Commander of Regiment 209, Division 312, Army Corps 1.

In August 2001, he was appointed as Deputy Chief of Staff of Division 312, Army Corps 1.

In June 2003, he became a member of the Division Party Committee, Deputy Division Commander and Chief of Staff of Division 312, Army Corps 1.

In November 2003, he was appointed to the position of Deputy Secretary of the Division Party Committee, Division Commander of Division 312, Army Corps 1.

In August 2008, he was appointed as a member of the Party Committee of the Army Corps, Deputy Commander of Military Affairs of the 1st Army Corps.

In February 2009, he became a member of the Corps Party Committee, Deputy Commander and Chief of Staff of the 1st Corps.

In June 2010, he was appointed to the position of Deputy Secretary of the Corps Party Committee, Commander of Corps 1.

In August 2010, he was promoted from Colonel to Major General.

In October 2011, he was appointed Secretary of the Party Committee of the General Staff - Ministry of National Defense, Deputy Chief of General Staff of the Vietnam People's Army.

In September 2013, he was promoted from Major General to Lieutenant General.

In March 2014, he was appointed to the position of Commander of Military Region 1, and also a member of the Central Military Commission.

On January 26, 2016, at the 12th National Congress of the Party, he was elected a member of the 12th Central Executive Committee of the Communist Party of Vietnam.

On April 12, 2016, in Decision No. 605/QD-TTg, Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc appointed Phan Van Giang to the position of Deputy Minister of National Defense of Vietnam.

On May 17, 2016, President Tran Dai Quang signed Decision No. 955/QD-CTN appointing Phan Van Giang as Chief of General Staff of the Vietnam People's Army; He is also a Standing Member of the Central Military Commission and Deputy Minister of National Defense.

On September 1, 2017, he was promoted from Lieutenant General to Senior Lieutenant General.

On January 30, 2021, at the 13th National Congress of the Party, he was elected a member of the 13th Central Executive Committee of the Communist Party of Vietnam. On January 31, 2021, at the First Conference of the 13th Party Central Committee, he was elected to the Politburo.

On April 8, 2021, at the 11th session of the 14th Vietnam National Assembly for the 2016-2021 term, Phan Van Giang was elected Minister of National Defense of Vietnam.

On July 12, 2021, President Nguyen Xuan Phuc decided to promote him to the military rank from Lieutenant General to General.

On July 28, 2021, at the first session of the 15th National Assembly, the President approved and appointed him to hold the position of Minister of Defense of the 15th Government of Vietnam, term 2021 - 2026.

On the morning of June 17, 2021, he was assigned personnel to join the Central Military Commission, term 2020-2025.

On August 25, 2021, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh signed Decision No. 1438/QD-TTg, appointing Mr. Phan Van Giang as Member of the National Steering Committee for COVID-19 Prevention and Control, Head of the Security Subcommittee. social life.
