The Tata Revotron engine[1] is a 1.2-liter 3-cylinder petrol engine produced by Tata Motors, currently used in the passenger vehicles.

Quick Facts Revotron Engine, Overview ...

Overview

The first engine from the Revotron line was introduced in 2014 on the Bolt and Zest. It was a 1,199 cc (1.2 L), 3-cylinder, [naturally aspirated, multi-point fuel injected unit. It produces 86 PS (85 hp; 63 kW) at 6000 rpm, and 113 newton-metres (83 lb⋅ft) of torque @ 3300 rpm. The engine features multiple driving modes for better throttle response, a Smart ECU, an eight-holed fuel injector, a stiffened crankcase, and a new catalytic converter. In 2017, Tata launched the turbocharged version of the Revotron engine with the Nexon. It was the same 1.2L 3-cylinder petrol engine but with a turbocharger and intercooler bolted onto it. It still used the conventional MPFi multi-port fuel injection although most of its rivals had turbo-petrol engines of around the same size with GDi. This turbocharged version of the Revotron engine produced 110 PS (110 hp; 81 kW) and 170 N⋅m (130 lb⋅ft). In 2020, the more powerful version of this engine with 120 PS (120 hp; 88 kW) made its debut on the BS6-compliant Nexon facelift, albeit it still uses MPFi.

In January 2021, Tata launched the turbocharged Revotron engine on the Altroz in a new variant called Altroz iTurbo,[2] albeit with lower power and torque figures at 110 PS (110 hp; 81 kW) and 140 N⋅m (100 lb⋅ft). Tata cited that the reason for the lower output is Tata wanted to differentiate the Altroz and Nexon and that there were also packaging challenges in incorporating the Nexon’s physically larger 6-speed manual transmisson, which would have been necessary to handle the increased power., but in January 2023 at the Auto Expo 2023 Tata showcased the Altroz Racer,[3] an even sportier variant of the Altroz with a 6-speed manual gearbox which allowed for the same 120 PS (120 hp; 88 kW) as the Nexon. Tata later confirmed that the Altroz Racer will go into production and may potentially replace the slow-selling iTurbo variant.

In January 2022, Tata announced the CNG variant for its Tata Tiago & Tata Tigor called iCNG.[4] These were the first cars from Tata Motors to have CNG as a fuel option. This engine produces 74 PS (73 hp, 55 kW) and 95 Nm Torque and is available with a 5 speed manual gearbox. These engines could be started in CNG mode, a feature no other car offers. Tata Motors has unveiled Punch & Altroz as well in the iCNG avatar.
