Even with 14,000+ edits, I learnt of {{Encodefirst}} only today when I read about it on WP:VPT. A new editor is very much unlikely to know about its existence. Now its documentation says, "For example, {{la}} fails as of August 2017 if its argument starts with * ". So, instead of having the users figure out how to fix the issue, the template itself should integrate whatever is needed to fix things.
