Early history

The Fifth Avenue Hotel is located on the former estate of Charlotte Goodridge, a Gilded Age society hostess^[1] who lived at 250 Fifth Avenue (at the northwest corner of 28th Street).^[2] After Goodridge's death in 1902, the property was sold to Second National Bank, which contracted architectural firm McKim, Mead & White to construct a five-story Italian Renaissance palazzo that opened to the public in 1907.^[1][3][4] There were two subsequent additions, one in 1913 adding two-stories and in an expansion in 1928. The building was purchased in 1978 by the Ohebshalom family for use as commercial and office space.^[5][6][3]

Conversion to hotel

In 2012, Alex Ohebshalom, hired architectural firms Perkins Eastman and PBDW Architects and interior designer Martin Brudnizki for renovating and converting the property into a luxury hotel.^[7][8] The renovation included the addition of a 24-story glass tower replacing the carriage house while restoring the mansion's original buff-colored brick and limestone facade, including its original terra cotta cornice.^[5][9][10]

The hotel opened in October 2023.^[11][12] Owned by Flâneur Hospitality, the hotel has 153 rooms. Most rooms and suites are located in the glass tower with some in the mansion. The mansion has 24 suites and the remainder of rooms and suites are in the tower. The hotel also includes two restaurants, Cafe Carmelini and The Portrait Bar. It also includes a ballroom and several unique meeting spaces.^{[6][13][14][15]} The ballroom is 3,000 square feet (280 m²) with 12-foot (3.7 m) ceilings.^[16]
