Zelda is a nickname for the feminine name Griselda,^[1] from Old High German grisja hilda, "gray battle-maid".^[2][3] It is also the feminine form of the Yiddish name Selig,^[1] meaning "blessed", "happy".^[4]

Since 1986, the name has been associated with the popular Nintendo franchise The Legend of Zelda and its eponymous character Princess Zelda.
