125th season of the English Football League


The 2023–24 season is the 125th season of the English Football League (EFL) and the eighth season under that name after it was renamed from The Football League in 2016. For the 11th season, the league is sponsored by Sky Betting & Gaming and is therefore known as the Sky Bet EFL.

Quick Facts Season ...

The EFL is contested through three divisions: the Championship, League One and League Two. The winner and the runner up of the Championship are automatically promoted to the Premier League and they are joined by the winner of the Championship playoff. The bottom two teams in League Two are relegated to the National League.

Notes:
  1. On 19 May 2023, Wigan Athletic were deducted four points for failing to pay players and staff on time following previous EFL rules breaches in the 2022–23 season.[2] Another four-point deduction was applied on 26 May, after the club's owners missed a deadline to deposit an amount equalling 125% of its monthly wage bill.[3]
  2. On 16 August 2023, Reading were deducted one point for failing to pay players on time and in full on three occasions in the 2022–23 season.[4] Another 3-point deduction was applied on 13 September, for failing to deposit wages on time.[5] Another 2-point deduction was applied on 27 February, due to late HMRC payments.[6]
