Each year 300,000 people in England and Wales get food poisoning from the Campylobacter bacterium. The most common way to become infected is by eating contaminated chicken. If the meat is not cooked properly, or if raw meat is allowed to cross-contaminate cooked food, you can end up swallowing live bacteria. The bacteria are destroyed by stomach acid but some will always survive.
