Opioid marketing drives prescription and overdose rates

A county-by-county study reveals the connections among the marketing of opioids, the rate at which doctors prescribe them, and overdose deaths.

There is an undeniable link among opioid marketing, opioid prescription rates, and deaths related to opioid overdoses in the United States, according to a new study.

Compiling data county by county across the nation, the study paints a stark picture of the connection between the number of drug marketing interactions per county and the number of people in that county who eventually die from opioid-related drug overdoses.

Study coauthor Scott Hadland, an assistant professor of pediatrics at Boston University and a pediatrician at Boston Medical Center, sees firsthand the effect prescription opioids are having on local young people. Here, Hadland speaks about the findings, which appear JAMA Network Open:
