Summary
Description 47 Ronin Gishi Portraits by Utagawa Yoshitora.png |
English:
47 Ronin Portraits by Utagawa Yoshitora (1836-1880). This samurai ukiyo-e shows 47 ronin (also called Ako Gishi "赤穂義士": virtuous men of Ako, or simply Gishi) who raided the residence of 'Kira Yoshinaka' (his court title was Kira Kozuke no suke) during the 'Ako Incident' that occurred during the Genroku era (1688-1704) in the middle of the Edo period. This work depicts the vassals of the Ako Domain of Harima Province (present-day Ako City, Aioi City, and Kamigori Town, Hyogo Prefecture). Note: only 45 ronin are visible in the artwork.
The Ako Incident refers to the execution of Asano Takuminokami (Asano Naganori), the lord of the Ako Domain who caused a sword injury to Kira Yoshinaka in Edo Castle. It refers to an incident in which vassals of the Ako clan killed Kira Yoshinaka.
