Summary
Description 9th Bombardment Group Aerial Mining.jpg |
English:
A B-29 of the 9th BG/313th BW drops two parachute-retarded Mark 26 aerial mines during Operation Starvation. The Mark 26 was a 1,000lb magnetic mine with 500lbs of either TNT or Torpex explosive. The Mark 36 was an improvement of the 26, with the same weight but acoustic with a larger charge. The 2,000lb Mark 25 mine was also acoustic. The 313th BW, based at North Field, Tinian, became solely responsible for mining missions during Starvation.
The plane is B-29-70-BW 44-69985 "Jake's Jalopy" named for the pilot, Capt Alden D Jacobson. It participated in this mining mission which looks like a training one, and operated later as a "Super Dumbo" and witnessed the mushroom cloud from Nagasaki while flying near Japan.
