n, merchant. By his will, datedApril 17, 1672, and proved September 26 in the same year byW. Hampton (his son-in-law), he directed that he should be buried in the vault belonging to the parish of Aldermanburynigh unto the place where my last dear wyfe lyeth, decentlywithout vaine pompe, and he gave to the Company Allsuch money as they shall owe me at the time of my decease upontheir Seale or otherwise, the same to be paid and distributed as itshall grow due unto and amongst such of the poor of the saidCompany as the master and wardens shall think fitt. In the enumeration of the monuments in St. Mary, Alder-manbury, given in Strypes Stow, occurs the following: A flatStone before the Communion Table over Walter Pell, Esq. ;Alderman and Merchant Taylor of London, 1673 (sic); he gave100/. towards the Rebuilding of the Church. SIR WILLIAM TURNER Sir Godfrey Kneller, b. 1646, d. 1723. Full-length, life-size, standing to his right before chair of state ;long brown hair; scarlet furred robe, broad linen collar, LordMayors gold chain and pendant badge ; left hand on hip, rightgloved hand resting on table to his right, on which is a flat blackhat tied with a black ribbon. Canvas, 94 inches high x 58 inches. Painted for the Company in 1687. At a Court held on April 30, 1673 : This Court taking intotheir serious consideracion the many and acceptable services thatSir William Turner, Knt. and Alderman and a worthy Benefactorof this Society hath from time to time done for this Companie,doth therefore think fit and so order, and the whole Court orany three of them, are desired this afternoone to waite on thesaid S1 William Turner, to returne him the hearty thanks of thisCourt for the same, and to desire of him the favour that he wouldbe pleased to sit whereby his picture might be drawne in thehabit as he was Lord Mayo
