Plus faible que la lumière zodiacale, cet airglow (ou lumière nocturne) a été photographié dans le ciel de l'Allier en France. Ce phénomène se forme à une altitude comprise entre 90 et 100 km de haut, dans la thermosphère. Il est visible par les nuits très sombres et sans pollution lumineuse. La couleur verte, similaire à celle des aurores boréales, provient de la désexcitation de l'oxygène atomique. Les ondulations observées ont pour origine des phénomènes dynamiques de l'atmosphère (ondes de gravité) qui modulent le rayonnement des espèces.
