Alton Towers gardens The western end of the gardens seen from the bridge across the lake. The monument on the right is to the 15th Earl of Shrewsbury (hence the topiary 'S' in front of it). He tamed the landscape surrounding the Towers; the inscription under his statue reads: He made the desert smile.
