V-1 during flight. Photo taken by my grandfather Jan B.H.A. Vervloedt, now in the family archives. The photo shows a V-1 during flight, possibly above Lint, a village near Lier and Antwerp. Most probably this is one of the V1s fired at the port of Antwerp.
The Fieseler Fi 103, better known as V-1 (German:
Vergeltungswaffe
1) was an early cruise missile used during World War Two. The V-1 was developed at Peenemünde by the German Luftwaffe during the Second World War. Between 13 June 1944 and 29 March 1945, it was fired at population centres such as London and Antwerp.

De V1 was het eerste zogenaamde V-wapen en een Duitse uitvinding uit de Tweede Wereldoorlog.
De naam V1 (Duitse afkorting) of V-1 (Engelse afkorting) was een afkorting van Vergeltungswaffe 1. Eigenlijk was de aanduiding Fieseler Fi 103. Het toestel was uitgerust met een explosieve lading in de neus en vloog door middel van een primitieve straalmotor aandrijving en een simpel geleidingssysteem op eigen kracht naar zijn doel. Volgens Duitse gegevens zijn 8564 V1’s naar Engeland en de haven van Antwerpen gelanceerd. Hiervan trof circa 57% zijn doel. Op de foto zien we vermoedelijk een V1 die over Lint (in de buurt van Lier) vliegt met als doel de haven van Antwerpen. De foto is door mijn grootvader Jan B.H.A. Vervloedt gemaakt en bevindt zich nu in de familie-archieven. |
