Summary

Arch of Gallienus, Rome.

The arch was built as an opening in the Servian Walls , by a private citizen, M. Aurelius Victor, and dedicated to emperor Gallienus , in AD 262. The legend on the arch, on two lines, reads:

GALLIENO CLEMENTISSIMO PRINCIPI CUIUS INVICTA VIRTUS SOLA PIETATE SUPERATA EST ET SALONINAE SANCTISSIMAE AUG (ustae)
AURELIUS VICTOR V (ir) E (gregius) DICATISSIMUS NUMINI MAIESTATIQUE EORUM.

This arch was built over the older Porta Esquilina , where via Labicana started.
