"Arthur H. Estabrook, a researcher for the Eugenics Record Office at the Carnegie Institution, is the subject of this studio portrait made in 1921. During a court case in Amherst County in 1924–1925, Estabrook served as an expert witness in favor of the forced sterilization of Carrie E. Buck by the state because she was deemed feebleminded and promiscuous. Estabrook was president of the Eugenics Research Association from 1925 until 1926."
