Summary
Description Bainbridge Roman Fort - geograph.org.uk - 930341.jpg |
English:
Bainbridge Roman Fort The Roman fort of Virosidum occupies a glacial mound to the east of the present village and is best viewed from the hillside to the south of the main road. The fort dates from the early 2nd century AD and was probably in use until the early 5th century. Built probably to keep the local Brigantes tribe in check, it was connected to other Roman forts and settlements in Lancashire by the very fine road that runs over the fells to the SW. There must also have been a road connecting this fort with those at Wensley and at Catterick, but there is very little evidence of a Roman road in Wensleydale.
