Eickhout, zelf klimaatwetenschapper die politicus is geworden, ziet dat klimaatverandering al lang geen linkse hobby meer is. Toch kunnen we niet geloven dat de politici die al jaren aan de knoppen zitten nu wel verandering teweeg gaan brengen met vage beloften. Klimaatneutraal in 2050 is makkelijk gezegd. In plaats van scherpe keuzes te maken, schuiven de huidige machthebbers het klimaatprobleem door naar onze kinderen en leggen ze de verantwoordelijkheid bij de zwakste schouders. Europeanen jong en oud willen verandering. Zij pikken het niet langer dat het vliegtuig goedkoper is dan de trein, dat mensen bedrogen worden met sjoemelsoftware in dieselauto’s, dat dieren worden opgehokt in de bioindustrie en als kiloknallers in de supermarkt belanden en dat de grootste vervuilers gratis CO2 mogen uitstoten. Maar alleen kun je weinig doen tegen de luchtvaartlobby of de bio-industrie.
