As part of the preparations for the Battle of the Somme , the British 18th (Eastern) Division launches a gas attack against German trenches in front of Montauban on the Somme, June 1916. At the top of the picture is Bernafay Wood. Montauban village is near the top-left. The road running diagonally across the photo from Montauban to the bottom-right connects to the village of Carnoy, behind the British front-line.
