Octobre 1915. La Première guerre mondiale a commencé il y a un peu plus d'un an et la forêt d'Argonne a déjà presque disparu. Les obus et leurs
shrapnels
n'ont laissé que quelques troncs étêtés. Les soldats (ici allemands) ont aménagé comme ils le pouvaient quelques abris et tranchées qu'il faudra sans cesse reconstruire. Ces paysages bouleversés donneront lieu à ce que le biogéographe (Biogéographie historique) Jean-paul Amat appellera des «Polémosylvofacies»
