English: US Army Cold Regions Research and Engineering Laboratory, Research Civil Engineer, T.J. Melendy, watches from his snowmobile as a C-17 takes off from the new Phoenix Airfield at McMurdo Station in Antarctica. After withstanding two takeoffs, two landings and a series of taxiing maneuvers, the new airfield is certified safe for wheeled aircraft.
