Het betreft hier een ceremoniële zetel van een chief/machthebber.
Dit is niet het traditionele West-Afrikaanse type stoel, zoals het in Ghana en bij de kustvolken van de Ivoorkust in al of niet ceremoniële context voorkomt. Het traditionele type ziet er namelijk als volgt uit: geen arm- of rugleuning, een gebogen zitvlak en een uit één stuk bestaand voetstuk. In man at Rest staat een identieke stoel, toegewezen aan de Senufo en eigendom van het Glenbow museum in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. Rattray (1954: 273) vermeldt een type stoel bij de Ashanti, de asipim-stoel, die wellicht een kopie is van vroege Europese modellen, die door Nederlandse en Portugese handelaren werden ingevoerd. Volgens de verkoper, de heer Schaller, werd de stoel alleen door het hoofd gebruikt, als reden hiervoor wees hij op de vrij hoge zitting en de aanwezigheid van rug- en armleuningen. "Naarmate de rang van de aanwezige notabelen lager is, zakt het niveau van de zitting en ontbreken de armleuningen". |
