Repronegatief. Tosari was al in de 19e eeuw het doel van toeristische uitstapjes. Het lag hoog (op ca. 2.000 meter) en was dus koel. Bovendien had men de vulkaan de Bromo en de bijbehorende Zandzee in de buurt. Ook kon men een kijkje nemen bij de Tenggerezen, een niet-islamitisch geworden groep Javanen die al vroeg de belangstelling trok van antropologen en toeristen. Door het koele klimaat was het ook een geschikte plaats voor een sanatorium. Europeanen konden er bijkomen van de vermoeienissen van de hete laaglanden, wat natuurlijk altijd goedkoper was dan opknappen in Holland. (P. Boomgaard, 2001).
