Summary
| Description | castle wendelsheim; Erbaut wurde dieses Schloss um 1758 im Auftrag von Rheingraf Carl Magnus Graf zu Salm-Gaugrehweiler (* 26.03.1718 + 01.07.1793), u.a. in Versailles aufgewachsen, von seinem Schloßbaumeister Johann Leonard Reichel, der ihm auch sein neues Residenzschloss Gaugrehweiler baute. Carl Magnus wurde 1775 zu zehn Jahre Haft vom Kaiser Josef II. wegen Finanzbetrug verurteilt. Nach vorzeitiger Haftentlassung starb er verarmt in seinem bereits von den Franzosen besetzten Schloss Gaugrehweiler (1807 abgerissen). 1788 verlegte der neue Eigentümer Wild- und Rheingraf Karl Ludwig Wilhelm Theoder zu Salm-Grumbach, seine Residenz von Grumbach hierher, mußte aber bereits 1792 vor den Franzosen flüchten. ´Die Vierflügelanlage mit spätbarockem, abgewalmtem Mansarddachbau; Gewölbestall, gegenüberliegendem ummauerten Schlossgarten wurde 1807 als Volksbesitz versteigert. Wegen des linksrheinischen Gebietsverlustes wurde sein Sohn später entschädigt. Als Entschädigung erhielt er durch Reichsdeputationshauptschluss im Jahre 1803 Stadt und Amt Horstmar. Im Jahre 1817 wurde er durch den König von Preußen in den Fürstenstand erhoben und führte nun den Titel Fürst zu Salm-Horstmar, dessen Geschlecht heute noch besteht. Schloss Wendelsheim ist heute im Privatbesitz, aber nicht im Eigentum der Fürsten zu Salm-Horstmar. |
