Description |
English:
Produce section at the Center Market in Washington, D.C. On the left is Louis P. Gatti's fruit and vegetable stand.
Built in 1871 and designed by noted architect Adolf Cluss, Center Market was located at 7th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue, NW in downtown Washington, D.C. It was one of several large markets (Center Market covered two city blocks) where Washingtonians shopped daily for various foods. Even before Center Market was constructed, the site had been used as a marketplace since 1801. Center Market was demolished in 1931 and replaced with the National Archives building. Eastern Market and O Street Market are the city's only historic market halls still standing, although Eastern Market is temporarily closed due to a fire in 2007 and the O Street Market's roof collapsed during a snowstorm in 2003. |
