The S.S. Christopher Columbus was a whaleback excursion liner designed by Alexander McDougall and built in 1892-1893 in Superior , Wisconsin by American Steel Barge Company for service to ferry passengers to and from the World's Columbian Exposition , and later placed in general and excursion service to various ports around the Great Lakes .
