Conformations-of-1,2-dihaloethanes-from-xtal-compared-F-vs-I-Mercury-3D-balls.png

Summary

Description

Ball-and-stick and space-filling models of the molecules 1,2-difluoroethane (C 2 H 4 F 2 ) and 1,2-diiodoethane (C 2 H 4 I 2 ), highlighting their different conformations . While 1,2-difluoroethane adopts a gauche conformation due to the gauche effect , 1,2-diiodoethane adopts an anti conformation (c.f. anti-periplanar ) due to steric effects , specifically Van der Waals strain .

The molecular structures are taken from the crystal structures reported in J. Chem. Crystallogr. (2003) 33 , 969-975 :
