Summary
Description Copper Range - 29 steam locomotive (2-8-0) & tender.jpg |
This 2-8-0 steam locomotive was built in 1907 by the American Locomotive Company for use by the Copper Range Railroad in Michigan's Upper Peninsula (UP). The engine hauled freight for the UP's copper mining industry and was also used in passenger trains. It was retired from service in the early 1950s, but it did head tourist trains in the UP's Keweenaw Peninsula during the late 1960s. The locomotive is now part of the Mid-Continent Railway Museum collection in the town of North Freedom, Wisconsin. The copper mines of Michigan's Upper Peninsula targeted native copper (Cu) that occurred in 1.1 billion year old basalt lava flows and interflow conglomerates.
