Die Ähre in der vorderen Schildhälfte symbolisiert die Landwirtschaft in der Gemeinde, die über Jahrhunderte eine große Bedeutung hatte. Die Hämmer nehmen Bezug auf den früheren Schieferabbau in der Gemarkung. Die grüne Farbe weißt auf den Waldbesitz hin.
Die hintere Schildhälfte erinnert an die ehemalige Zugehörigkeit zur Vorderen Grafschaft Sponheim, Oberamt Kirchberg.
