Deutsch: Das Wappen zeigt den heiligen Mauritius, den einzigen Heiligen, der im Mittelalter mit dunkler Hautfarbe dargestellt wurde. Das heutige offizielle Stadtwappen stammt aus dem Jahre 1974.
English: The arms show the head of St. Mauritius, the patron saint of the city. The arms first appear in the early 16th century, but it was already used as a symbol for the city on coins from the early 14th century. The seals showed the arms of the rulers of the city, first the Counts of Henneberg and later the Counts of Meissen. The present image was last changed in 1974.
