Das Wappen verbindet die "redenden" Kleeblätter für Kleve mit dem alten landesherrlichen Zeichen der Grafen. Das Wappen basiert auf mittelalterliche Siegel. Die heutige Tingierung ist seit 1614 bekannt. (zitiert aus Kleve: Das Stadtwappen )
English: „Gules an escutcheon Argent accompanied by three trifoils Or in ratio 2:1.“
The present arms were officially granted in 1955. Kleve became a city in the 13th century. The arms show the old arms of the counts of Kleve, a red shield with a white escutcheon. The trifoils are a canting symbol. The oldest great seals of the city show a castle or a city with between the towers the arms of the counts of Kleve (see the county arms).
