Summary

Description
English: regeneration process of a diesel particulate filter without additive in a Volkswagen 2008 1.9 TDI with pump-injectors

Legend: red: additional diesel injection mass green: filter load skin: exhaust gas temperature before filter turquoise: exhaust gas temperature after filter brown: exhaust gas temperature before turbocharger

Stages:

  1. start of the regeneration by igniting the carbon inside the filter with heated exhaust gas via additional diesel injection after the main combustion
  2. ignition of the exothermic burning inside the filter slightly less additional fuel is injected
  3. deceleration fuel cutoff resulting in increase of oxygen in the exhaust gas resulting in faster and hotter burning
  4. additional fuel injection is cutoff and the remaining ignited carbon-particulate matter burns away
