Summary
Description Domafonsov.jpg |
English:
King Afonso V of Portugal, hand-colored sketch from the journal of Georg von Ehingen (1428-1508), currently held by the Württembergische Landesbibliothek in Stuttgart. George von Ehingen was a German Swabian knight who briefly served the Portuguese king Afonso V in Ceuta in 1458-59. The author of the sketch is uncertain, but it was included in the manuscript of von Ehingen's memoirs written around 1470, or perhaps a little later, currently held in Stuttgart. A woodcut based on this sketch is found in the printed version of von Ehingen's memoirs, the
Itinerarium
, published in 1600 in Augsburg. As von Ehingen was a contemporary of Afonso V, this may be perhaps a reasonably accurate likeness of the king.
