Summary

Description
English: Locations of towns and villages important to Elias Lönnrot's work compiling The Kalevala.

Blue towns are Russian, red towns are Finnish and Kajaani is in green as it was Lönnrot's base of operations for most of his work.

The current border is shown purely for reference purposes as it played no impact in Lönnrots collecting because Finland was part of Russia during that time and the border was not policed.

This map image could be re-created using vector graphics as an SVG file . This has several advantages; see Commons:Media for cleanup for more information. If an SVG form of this image is available, please upload it and afterwards replace this template with {{ vector version available | new image name }} .

It is recommended to name the SVG file “Elias Lönnrot field trips-notable karelia locations-1.svg”—then the template Vector version available (or Vva ) does not need the new image name parameter.
